Five Tall Crops That Are Well Suited to Drone Spraying

Spraying a short, open paddock is one thing. Spraying above dense corn, mature fruit trees or an established olive grove can be a very different challenge.

Tall crops can restrict access, block spray equipment and make manual application slow and physically demanding. In the right situation, an agricultural drone can apply treatment from above without driving through the crop.

Here are five tall crops commonly found across Gippsland where drone spraying may offer a practical advantage.

1. Olive groves

A local olive grower contacted Swift Drone Solutions after finding olive lace bug across a grove of approximately 500 trees.

They already had an intended treatment and originally planned to apply it using a 14-litre backpack mister. The problem was that one tank only covered around three trees, taking approximately 15 minutes of spraying.

Across 500 trees, that would have meant more than 40 hours of spraying alone—before allowing for walking back to the garage, measuring, mixing and repeatedly refilling the backpack.

We connected the grower with an agronomist, who assessed the situation and identified nutritional deficiencies in the grove as well. The final application therefore included both an insecticide treatment and a foliar fertiliser, based on the agronomist’s recommendations.

Using the drone, all 500 trees were sprayed from above within approximately four to five hours.

The olive lace bug population was reduced, the trees visibly recovered and the grower was able to successfully harvest the olives for oil—the outcome they had been worried they might lose.

The drone did not just save time. It allowed the whole grove to be treated promptly, reduced the physical workload and avoided days or weeks of repeated backpack spraying.

2. Corn and maize

Once corn or maize grows above head height, walking through the crop becomes difficult and ground equipment can damage plants.

Drone spraying allows the operator to remain outside the crop while the aircraft applies treatment from above. This can be useful where access is restricted, crop damage needs to be minimised or treatment is required later in the growing season.

3. Fruit orchards

Apple, pear and other fruit trees can create similar challenges to an olive grove.

Dense canopies, narrow rows and mature trees can make manual spraying slow. A drone may offer a faster way to cover the orchard without repeatedly driving machinery between the trees, provided the required spray coverage and product label can be achieved.

4. Vineyards

Although grapevines are not always especially tall, their dense canopies and narrow rows can make them difficult to treat.

Drone application may suit vineyards where the ground is wet, sloping or difficult for conventional equipment. It can also help avoid tyre traffic and soil damage between rows during wet Gippsland conditions.

5. Tree plantations and shelterbelts

Young plantations, shelterbelts and farm forestry areas can quickly become difficult to access from the ground.

Drones can treat areas above uneven terrain, around obstacles or where driving machinery between trees would be unsafe or impractical.

When a drone may not be the best choice

Drone spraying is not automatically the right option for every tall crop.

Some treatments require very high water volumes, strong penetration through a dense canopy or specialised ground-based equipment. Small plantings may also be quicker to treat manually.

The product label, crop, target pest or disease, required coverage and agronomic recommendations all need to be considered before deciding on an application method.

The advantage of a drone is not that it replaces every sprayer. It provides another option when height, access, crop damage, labour or timing make traditional application difficult.

For the Gippsland olive grower, a task that could have taken weeks of repeated mixing, refilling and backpack spraying was completed across the entire grove in a matter of hours.
